Nollig Castle
Germany, Germany
Nollig Castle, located above Lorch in the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany, originated around 1300 as a half-timbered fortified tower built by the Archbishop of Mainz to counterbalance Burg Fürstenberg across the Rhine, serving primarily as a watchtower integrated into the town's northwest bastion and walls.
Its unique construction encased the original wooden framework in heavy stone masonry with a shield wall and corner towers, possibly atop Roman fort foundations, before later private renovation in the 1930s turned parts into a residence.
Today, the privately owned ruins offer stunning Rhine Valley vistas best appreciated from river cruises, hiking trails like the Rheinsteig, or the opposite bank, though not open to the public.
