North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, was founded in 1861 as Plainfield College during the Civil War and was one of the few coeducational colleges in the country at that time.
It moved to Naperville in 1870 and underwent name changes to North-Western College and then in 1926 to North Central College to avoid confusion with Northwestern University. The college emphasizes a liberal arts education combined with professional preparation and has grown to serve around 3,000 students.
It offers over 90 undergraduate majors and minors as well as graduate programs across several schools including Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences, and the Shimer Great Books School.
