Nürburg Castle
Nürburg, Germany, Germany
Nürburg Castle is a dramatic ruined hilltop fortress in the Eifel Mountains near Nürburg village south of Adenau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, first documented in 1166 on a 678-meter basalt cone possibly used as a Roman signal station.
Built in three phases with a rectangular inner ward, added zwinger walls under bailiff Johann von Schleiden (1340-1369), and a third defensive ring in the 15th century, it served strategic roles until French forces destroyed it in 1689 during the Nine Years' War, later quarried for stone.
Restored in 1818 as a trigonometric point with its prominent bergfried keep topped by a conical slate roof, the site now offers paid public access, stunning Eifel panoramas, and ties to the nearby Nürburgring racetrack amid hiking trails.
