Nysø Manor
Denmark, Denmark
Nysø Manor is a Baroque-style manor house built in 1673 near Præstø in Vordingborg Municipality on Denmark's Zealand island, designed by Ewert Janssen as the country's first in that architectural style with red brick, sandstone details, and a red-tiled roof.
Originally commissioned for local official Jens Lauridsen, it later became a hub during Denmark's Golden Age, hosting figures like sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen—who lived and worked there from 1838 to 1844—and Hans Christian Andersen, now featuring the Thorvaldsen Collection of his clay models, sculptures, and drawings in an eastern outbuilding.
The 1,041-hectare estate includes surrounding properties like Jungshovedgaard, a partially filled moat, a clock with striking figures, and gardens open for tours blending history, art, and nature.
