Oatlands Historic House and Gardens in Leesburg, Virginia, is a National Historic Landmark and estate established in 1798 by George Carter, a descendant of Virginia’s early colonial family. The property includes a classic Federal-style mansion built starting in 1804, outbuildings, and 415 acres of farmland and gardens.

Originally operating as a wheat plantation using enslaved laborers, the estate evolved through the years, housing a girls’ school and summer boarding house after the Civil War. The gardens were restored in the early 20th century by later owners who added terraces, boxwood-lined parterres, statuary, a rose garden, and other ornamental features. Oatlands also boasts the oldest standing greenhouse in the southern United States.

The estate shares the complex history of both its architecture and its enslaved community, with efforts today to educate visitors about all aspects of the site’s heritage. Open for public visits, it offers trails, gardens, historic buildings, and guided tours that explore its cultural and historical significance.
