Obere Burg, also known as Neu-Schellenberg Castle, is a medieval castle ruin located in the municipality of Schellenberg in northern Liechtenstein.

Built around the year 1200, it is one of the country’s oldest castles and was originally constructed as a hilltop fortress to control and defend the surrounding Rhine Valley. The castle changed ownership several times during the Middle Ages and was damaged during regional conflicts, including the Appenzell Wars in the early 15th century.

Although it was repaired, it was eventually abandoned in the 16th century and gradually fell into ruin. Today, Obere Burg is one of Liechtenstein’s most important historic sites and is freely open to visitors. The preserved ruins offer insight into medieval architecture and provide beautiful panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and surrounding countryside.
