Oberstaufenbach is a small rural municipality in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate within the Kusel district, part of the Verbandsgemeinde Kusel-Altenglan near the Palatinate Forest, first mentioned in 1377 as "Oberstauffenbach" deriving from a prominent basalt outcrop called "stouf" along the Reichenbach stream.

Evidence of La Tène-era Celtic settlement and 1st-3rd century Roman presence exists at the nearby Heidenburg site with graves rather than a fort, while by around 1000 it fell under Kaiserslautern's Imperial Domain and the Deinsberg parish, later passing through Veldenz counts and Palatinate-Zweibrücken rule amid medieval feuds.

Incorporated into French Mont-Tonnerre department post-1794 Revolution before joining Bavaria in 1816, the farming village of about 400 residents features modern amenities like a 1824 schoolhouse alongside historic trails and a quarry on its 380-meter hills.
