Oberstein Castle
Idar-Oberstein, Germany, Germany
Oberstein Castle, also called Schloss Oberstein or the "New Castle," is a medieval hilltop fortress above Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built around 1320 by the Daun-Oberstein family west of the older Burg Bosselstein ruins.
First mentioned in 1330 as the "house above the house zum Stein," it featured a triangular core with four corner towers, a Gothic gatehouse with a defensive oriel and trapdoor, and a trapezoidal main building, serving as the noble family's residence until their line's extinction.
Burned by French forces in 1697 during the War of the Palatine Succession and again in 1855, it was rebuilt by the Burgenverein Schloss Oberstein society since 1963 and restored from 1981, now used for events with panoramic Nahe Valley views.
