Observatory of Ulugbek
Samarkand, Samarkand Region, Uzbekistan
The Observatory of Ulugbek in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is one of the most important scientific monuments of the medieval world.
Built in the 1420s by the astronomer-ruler Ulugh Beg, the observatory became a leading centre for astronomical research, where scholars produced highly accurate star catalogues and measurements of celestial movements.
Although much of the structure was destroyed after Ulugh Beg’s death, the surviving remains of its enormous astronomical instruments and the accompanying museum highlight the remarkable scientific achievements of the Timurid era and Uzbekistan’s rich intellectual heritage.
