Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Laikipia County, Kenya
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 360 km² (90,000-acre) not-for-profit wildlife conservancy in Laikipia County, central Kenya, located on the equator just west of Nanyuki between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya. It is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary, home to over 100 black rhinos, and holds global significance as the last refuge on Earth for the northern white rhino, housing the world’s final two individuals, Sudan’s daughter Najin and granddaughter Fatu, under 24-hour armed guard. The conservancy also features the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where rescued, orphaned chimpanzees can be seen, and supports the full “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) along with giraffes, zebras, and numerous other species across its mosaic of grasslands, woodlands, and thickets. Originally a working cattle ranch, Ol Pejeta transformed into a conservation leader that generates income through eco-tourism, runs a successful livestock program to benefit local pastoralists, and invests in community projects for health, education, water, and infrastructure for about 45,000 people in neighboring communities.
