Old Wolfstein Castle, or Burg Alt‑Wolfstein, is a ruined hillside castle on the eastern slope of the Königsberg at the narrowest point in the Lauter valley near the town of Wolfstein in the Kusel district of Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.

It was probably built under Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa around 1160–1170 to guard and administer the surrounding imperial lands near Kaiserslautern and later became the namesake fortress near which the town of Wolfstein was founded in 1275, when Habsburg King Rudolf I ordered a fortified free town to be established “near his castle Woluisstein.”

Over time the castle declined in importance, especially as the newer New Wolfstein Castle (Neu‑Wolfstein) above the town took over many administrative and defensive roles, and Old Wolfstein eventually fell into ruin, with only scattered remains visible today.

The site now functions mainly as a historic landmark and a quiet destination for walkers exploring the steep, forested slopes of the Palatinate Forest around Wolfstein.
