Orto Botanico dell'Università di Camerino
Camerino, Italy
The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Camerino, also known as the Carmela Cortini Botanical Garden, is a historic university garden in Camerino, Italy, founded in 1828 by Professor Vincenzo Ottaviani, a botanist and papal physician who focused on medicinal plants from the Apennines for teaching and research.
Spanning a terraced area once occupied by uncultivated gardens and orchards, it divides into a flat section with shrubs and herbaceous plants and a sloped woodland area featuring mature trees, ferns, and exotic collections added later by directors like Agostino Reali in 1864, who built greenhouses for tropical species.
By 1835, it already housed over 1,000 trees, shrubs, and ground plants, serving today as a living lab for botany education amid the Marche region's natural beauty.
