Orto Botanico delle Alpi Apuane "Pietro Pellegrini"
Italy, Italy
The Orto Botanico delle Alpi Apuane "Pietro Pellegrini" is a small mountain botanical garden and nature preserve in Tuscany, Italy, located at about 900 meters on a rocky promontory called Pian della Fioba near Massa, in the heart of the Apuan Alps.
Covering roughly 3 hectares, it was founded in 1966 and officially opened to the public in 1981 to study and conserve the unique high‑mountain flora of the Apuan Alps, and it is now dedicated to the local botanist and physician Pietro Pellegrini, who researched the area’s plants.
The garden sits on a limestone‑and‑schist ridge between about 850 and 950 meters above sea level, featuring a curated collection of native alpine species, educational labels, and walking paths that let visitors explore the harsh, rocky environment while learning about alpine botany.
Managed by the municipality of Massa in collaboration with universities in Pisa, Florence, and Siena, the site functions as both a scientific plant collection and a quiet, scenic stop for hikers and nature lovers exploring the Apuan landscape.
