The Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI) in Peshawar was established in 1947 to train forestry professionals and conduct research on environmental conservation and natural resource management.

Initially located in Faisalabad, it moved several times before settling in its permanent complex at the University of Peshawar campus in the mid-1950s. The institute focuses on forestry research, including forest utilization, entomology, botany, chemistry, medicinal plants, and silviculture. It plays a vital role in addressing forestry challenges such as desertification, afforestation in arid zones, reclamation of degraded soils, and biodiversity conservation.

The institute operates under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forestry, Environment and Wildlife Department and is affiliated with the University of Peshawar for degree programs. Its facilities include classrooms, laboratories, workshops, research nurseries, an arboretum, and extensive residential and educational infrastructure, making it a key institution for forestry education and research in Pakistan.
