Palazzo Balbiani is a historic palace in the center of Chiavenna that was once the residence of the powerful Balbiani counts, who were feudal lords of the area.

The building dates to before 1477 and originally served as a fortified residence, reflecting the importance of Chiavenna as a strategic Alpine town. During the period of Grisons rule, much of the original structure was destroyed or fell into decline. A major reconstruction in 1930 restored the building, although only the original façade and two cylindrical towers survived from the earlier palace.

Today, Palazzo Balbiani remains one of Chiavenna’s notable historic landmarks. Its fortified appearance, stone architecture, and prominent location in Piazza Castello make it an important reminder of the town’s medieval and Renaissance heritage.
