Pandino Castle
Pandino, Italy, Italy
Pandino Castle, also known as the Visconti Castle, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Lombardy.
Built between 1355 and 1361 by Bernabò Visconti and his wife Regina della Scala, it was designed not only as a defensive stronghold but also as an elegant country residence and hunting retreat for the rulers of Milan. The castle has a distinctive square layout with corner towers, a moat, and a large central courtyard surrounded by arcades and loggias.
Many original decorative frescoes featuring the symbols of the Visconti and Della Scala families have survived, making it an important example of 14th-century architecture and art. After passing through several owners and a period of decline, the castle was restored by the municipality of Pandino in the 20th century.
Today, it serves as a cultural and civic landmark, housing municipal offices and welcoming visitors who want to explore its rich history and remarkably preserved medieval structure.
