Peel Castle

Peel, Isle of Man, Norway

Peel Castle is a historic fortress on St Patrick's Isle in Peel, Isle of Man, United Kingdom—not Norway—originally constructed by Norwegian Vikings in the 11th century under King Magnus Barefoot on the site of an earlier Celtic Christian monastery from around 550 AD. The wooden fort was later rebuilt in stone during the 14th century with a prominent round tower, gatehouse, curtain walls of red sandstone, and towers to defend against mainland attacks, serving as a key stronghold for the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles amid Norse, Scottish, and English control. Abandoned in the 18th century after serving as a cathedral seat and prison, its ruins—excavated in the 1980s revealing Viking artifacts like the "Pagan Lady" grave and silver coins—now form a Manx National Heritage site famed for the ghostly Moddey Dhoo black dog legend and panoramic coastal views.
