Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid) is one of Iran’s most important ancient archaeological sites, located near Shiraz in Fars Province. Founded by Darius I around 518 BCE, it served as the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire and was renowned for its grand palaces, monumental stairways, detailed stone reliefs, and impressive architecture. Although much of the complex was damaged after its conquest by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE, its magnificent ruins still reflect the power, artistry, and cultural achievements of ancient Persia. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Persepolis remains a symbol of Iran’s rich historical heritage.
