Philippstein Castle
Braunfels, Germany, Germany
Philippstein Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin located about 3 km from the town center of Braunfels in Hesse, Germany, built in 1390 by Count Philipp I of Nassau‑Weilburg‑Saarbrücken mainly to secure the area against the nearby Counts of Solms, who owned Braunfels Castle.
The castle sits on a rocky spur above the town and originally consisted of a round keep, cellar rooms, and defensive walls separated from the approach by a dry moat, serving as a strategic outpost in the Lahn valley. Today it survives as an atmospheric ruin with visible traces of the keep and wall fragments, accessible via short hiking trails from Braunfels and offering pleasant views over the surrounding forested countryside.
