Piha is a scenic black-sand surf beach on New Zealand’s North Island, situated about 40 kilometers west of Auckland.

It is renowned for its dramatic natural beauty, featuring rugged cliffs, Lion Rock, a prominent volcanic formation resembling a resting lion—and powerful surf conditions. The area includes a small village that is a popular summer retreat for Aucklanders and visitors from further afield. Piha is part of the Waitākere Ranges, an extensive area of native forest and volcanic scenery, offering numerous walking trails through lush greenery. 

The beach itself is divided into North and South Piha, with South Piha being more famous for its surf, while North Piha offers a more wild and less crowded experience. Historically, the region is significant for its Maori heritage, with the Piha Stream and surrounding lands having traditional importance.
