Its history dates back to around 1300 when it was documented as a fishing village with a community of Basilian monks and a fort. The town is famous for the Castello Murat, a fortress where Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law and former King of Naples, was imprisoned and executed in 1815.

Pizzo is also celebrated as the birthplace of the renowned gelato dessert "Tartufo," a chocolate and hazelnut ice cream specialty created in the 1950s. Visitors enjoy exploring the narrow cobbled streets, historic churches, and the unique Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, a chapel carved into a sea-facing cave by sailors in the 17th century.
