Plön Castle
Plön, Germany, Germany
Plön Castle, known as Schloss Plön, is one of the largest castles in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, perched on the Schlossberg hill overlooking Lake Plön and the town below.
Originating from a 10th-century Slavic fortress destroyed and rebuilt by the Counts of Holstein around 1173, the current Renaissance-style residence was constructed between 1632 and 1635 during the Thirty Years' War by Duke Joachim Ernest as a ducal seat.
Expanded with baroque and rococo interiors under later dukes like Frederick Charles and serving as a Danish royal summer residence in the 19th century, it later functioned as a military academy and boarding school before becoming a training center for opticians today.
