Verified Ponte di San Rocco

Vimercate, Italy, Italy

Ponte di San Rocco is one of the most iconic landmarks in Vimercate and is considered the last surviving fortified bridge in Lombardy.

Its oldest sections date back to the Roman era, likely the 3rd century, and it was later strengthened with defensive towers during the Middle Ages, serving both as a bridge over the Molgora stream and as a gateway to the medieval town. The structure combines Roman engineering with medieval military architecture, featuring stone arches and two fortified towers.

Over the centuries it became a symbol of Vimercate’s history and identity, surviving while other town gates were demolished. Carefully restored several times, most recently in the modern era, the bridge remains one of the best-preserved historic monuments in the area. Today it is admired for its unique blend of Roman and medieval heritage and is a major attraction in Vimercate’s historic center.
