Verified Ponte Vecchio

Florence, Tuscany, Italy

The Ponte Vecchio (“Old Bridge”) is Florence’s most iconic medieval stone bridge, spanning the Arno River in Tuscany, Italy, and distinguished as Europe’s oldest surviving stone Segmental arch bridge, completed in 1345 after earlier wooden versions were destroyed by floods.

Its three low arches were engineered to reduce obstruction to floodwaters, a major innovation over Roman bridge designs, and the bridge is famously lined with two rows of colorful buildings that house almost exclusively high-end goldsmiths and jewelers—a tradition dating to 1593 when Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici replaced butchers and tanners whose odors offended the Medici court.

Running above the shops is the secret Vasari Corridor, an elevated passageway commissioned in 1565 by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici to connect the Palazzo Vecchio (city hall) with the Palazzo Pitti (the Medici residence), allowing the ruling family to move unseen by the public; the corridor is now a museum but remains closed to general visitors. The Ponte Vecchio miraculously survived World War II as the only bridge in Florence not destroyed by retreating German forces, and today it draws couples who attach padlocks to its railings as symbols of eternal love, while visitors sit on benches at dusk to enjoy romantic sunset views, street musicians, and the glittering display of artisan jewelry shops.
