Popoli Castle, commonly known as the Castello Cantelmo, is a striking medieval fortress perched on the slopes of Mount Morrone above the town of Popoli in Abruzzo.

Built around a Lombard watchtower and expanded between the 10th and 11th centuries, it occupied a strategic position controlling the Popoli gorges and protecting important routes through the region. The castle is closely associated with the powerful Cantelmo family, who became feudal lords of the area in 1269 and transformed the fortress during the late Middle Ages.

Its distinctive triangular layout, towers, double defensive walls, and moat made it one of the most important strongholds in the area. Although damaged by earthquakes and eventually abandoned as a residence, the castle remains one of Abruzzo’s most impressive historic landmarks. Today, its restored ruins offer visitors panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s medieval past.
