Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden in Missouri, spans 970 acres of rolling hills and meadows originally acquired in 1948 by George E. Powell, Sr., a businessman who donated the land in 1969 to the Boy Scouts before it transformed into a botanical garden.

Established officially as Powell Gardens in 1988, it features a mix of display gardens including a Conservatory, Perennial Garden, Island Garden, Heartland Harvest Garden—the nation’s largest edible landscape—and a Woodland and Stream Garden. The site showcases contemporary architecture designed by E. Fay Jones, including the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, Visitor Education Center, and Meadow Pavilion, all designed to blend harmoniously with the natural setting.

The gardens host seasonal flower displays, educational classes, community events, and offer extensive nature trails, making it a celebrated destination for plant lovers and visitors seeking inspiration and relaxation amidst Missouri’s natural beauty.
