Prümerburg Castle
Prümzurlay, Germany, Germany
Prümerburg Castle is a ruined medieval hill castle dramatically situated on a 30-meter-high sandstone cliff overlooking the Prüm River valley above the village of Prümzurlay in Germany's Eifel region, Rhineland-Palatinate.
Known since the 9th century as the "ancient castle of Layen" and first documented in a 1337 feudal contract, its pentagonal defense tower dates to the 12th-13th centuries, with a preserved southern gable wall of the palas residential building featuring medieval window seats and an accessible vaulted cellar.
Burned down in 1658 during the Franco-Dutch War and never rebuilt, visitors today cross the eastern moat via a path to climb the tower for sweeping valley views in a scenic hiking spot.
