“Qaleh” (also spelled Qal‘eh or Kal‘eh) is a common Persian word meaning “fortress,” “castle,” or “citadel,” and in Iran it is used as a place name for many different villages, neighborhoods, and rural districts rather than referring to a single specific site.

There are numerous Iranian localities called Qaleh, Qaleh‑ye Olya, Qaleh Lan, Pas Qaleh, and similar variations, spread across provinces such as Kurdistan, Fars, Kerman, Ardabil, Gilan, East Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, Hormozgan, and North Khorasan, each with its own small population and local history.

One especially important archaeological site with a similar name is Qaleh Kurd cave, near the village of Qaleh in Qazvin Province, which is the oldest known prehistoric human site in Iran, with evidence of human activity dating back roughly 452,000 to 165,000 years; this site is often discussed in the context of early human dispersal between the Levant and Central Asia.

Another notable mention is Qaleh in Qorveh, Kurdistan Province, which was once a village and the capital of Badr Rural District before merging with the city of Qorveh and becoming a neighborhood, with a population of over 4,000 people in 2006, largely Kurdish.
