Qal'eh Dokhtar
Mark, Iran
Qal'eh Dokhtar, also known as "The Maiden Castle," is a historic fortress built by Ardashir I around 209 AD in present-day Fars Province, Iran. Located on a steep mountain slope overlooking a river and roadway, it served as a defensive stronghold and symbol of the power of the Sassanian Empire.
The castle features thick walls, large towers, vaulted chambers, and a domed roof supported by squinches. It likely had a ceremonial use as well as military functions, and its architecture reflects sophisticated Sassanian engineering. Named possibly in honor of the goddess Anahita, associated with purity, the fortress is part of the archaeological landscape of the Sassanian Empire, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018.
The castle is an important cultural and historical site, representing early Persian imperial architecture and heritage.
