Qal'eh Kuh of Ferdows
South Khorasan Province, Iran
Qal'eh Kuh of Ferdows is a ruined fortress located on top of Kuh-e Ghal'eh, south of Ferdows in South Khorasan Province, Iran. It was a major stronghold of the Nizari Ismailis during the Alamut period and was the largest Nizari fortress in the Quhistan region. The castle was connected to nearby forts and the city of Tun (now Ferdows) through secret underground passages, which were discovered after earthquakes in 1968.
The fortress was famously destroyed and burned in May 1256 when it was captured by invading Mongol forces led by Kitbuqa and Köke Ilgei. Today, Qal'eh Kuh stands as a significant historical and archaeological site representing the military architecture and turbulent history of the region during the medieval period.
