Qaleh Shir
Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran
Qaleh Shir, also known as قلعه شیر, is an ancient castle located near Shahmirzad in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran.
The castle dates back to the Parthian period and was historically part of the Tabaristan region, serving to protect important roadways that branched off from the Silk Road.
In later centuries, it was used by the Ismailis, who constructed underground tunnels within the fortress to access water sources and secure themselves against enemies.
Although much of its interior is now buried, the castle's walls, towers, and fortifications remain well preserved. It is considered one of the most important castles in the ancient region of Qumis, surrounded by other historic forts, beautiful natural scenery, and a mild climate, making it a culturally and historically significant site in Iran.
