Querfurt Castle
Querfurt, Germany, Germany
Querfurt Castle in Querfurt, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is one of central Germany's largest and best-preserved medieval fortifications, first mentioned around 885-899 in the Hersfeld Tithe Register as "Cunfurdeburg" and expanded by the noble lords of Querfurt from the 10th century.
The influential family, related to Saxon emperors, made it their ancestral seat until 1496, after which it passed to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, featuring key structures like the Palas, Marterturm, Dicker Heinrich tower, and 14th-century outer ring wall.
It served as a residence for the princes of Saxony-Querfurt from 1663, saw action in the Thirty Years' War, and later became a Prussian domain until restorations in the 1970s; today, it houses a museum, administrative offices, and offers guided tours.
