Rashkan Castle
Ray, Iran
Rashkan Castle is an ancient fortress located near the city of Ray, Iran, dating back over 2000 years to the Parthian Empire. Built on a high hill with sturdy stone and mortar walls, it served as a defensive stronghold to protect the important city of Ray, also known historically as Arshakieh.
The castle is named after Arsaces I, the founder of the Parthian dynasty, and reflects architectural traditions of the Parthian and Sassanian periods, including vaulted roofs and defensive towers. Excavations have revealed that it was not only a military site but also possibly a residence for Parthian princes and used for important ceremonies. Though the structure was mostly intact until the Qajar era, much of it is now in ruins.
Artifacts found at the site are preserved in the National Museum of Iran. Rashkan Castle remains a significant cultural and historical landmark near Tehran.
