Ratti Gali Lake is a glacial alpine lake tucked away in the Neelum Valley of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan, at an elevation of about 3,683 meters (12,083 feet). It’s a place where nature seems to have painted with its most vivid palette—crystal-clear turquoise waters framed by snow-dusted peaks, lush meadows, and bursts of wildflowers.

The lake is fed by the meltwater of surrounding glaciers, which keeps it icy cold and pristine throughout the short summer season when it’s accessible. To reach Ratti Gali, travelers typically begin their journey from the village of Dowarian. From there, a rugged jeep track leads to the base camp, followed by a trek of about 1.5 to 2 hours through alpine meadows and rocky trails.

The name “Ratti” comes from the reddish stones found in the area, adding a unique hue to the already dramatic landscape. The lake’s remote location and challenging access only add to its allure, making it a favorite among trekkers, photographers, and solitude seekers. Camping near the lake is possible and offers a magical experience—imagine waking up to the reflection of towering peaks in still waters, with only the sound of wind and birdsong for company.

The best time to visit is between July and September, when the snow has melted and the trail is open.
