Red Moor
Germany, Germany
The Red Moor, or Rotes Moor, is a 50-hectare raised bog in the Hessian Rhön Mountains of Germany, ranking as the second-largest high moor in the High Rhön after the Black Moor.
Located southeast of Wasserkuppe near the B278 highway between Wüstensachsen-Ehrenberg and Bischofsheim an der Rhön, it forms part of a 315-hectare nature reserve established in 1979 within the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and Natura 2000 network.
Centuries of peat cutting until the 1980s reduced its core active bog to about five hectares across the Great Red Moor and Little Red Moor sections, but restoration efforts have revived boardwalk trails, an observation tower, a moor lake, and unique ecosystems featuring Carpathian birch woods, specialized birds like black grouse and jack snipe, and rare flora.
