Rennsteiggarten Oberhof
Oberhof, Germany, Germany
The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is Germany's largest and most diverse Alpine garden, a 7-hectare botanical garden specializing in mountain flora located at Am Pfanntalskopf 3 in Oberhof, Thuringia, at an elevation of 868 meters on the Pfanntalskopf in the Thüringer Wald.
Established in 1970 on the grounds of a former quarry, the garden contains approximately 4,000 different plant species from the mountains of Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, and Arctic regions, offering visitors a world tour through diverse mountain flora from across the continents. The garden features detailed recreations of natural habitats seamlessly integrated into the existing landscape, with protected plant species from the Thuringian mountains, including an indigenous plant bog created in 1980, a nature garden for protected Thuringian plants begun in 1985, and a garden of Thuringian herbs added in 1993.
Visitors can enjoy a gentle, step-free main path about 1 kilometer long that brings plants close to the walkway without barriers, and the garden hosts annual events including Kräutertage (herb days) showcasing medicinal herbs, the Blütenfest (flower festival) in June during peak blooming season, and the Herbstfest (autumn festival) in September.
