Reptile Gardens in Colonial Pine Hills, South Dakota, was founded in 1937 by Earl Brockelsby, a young reptile enthusiast who recognized people's fascination with snakes. Initially a modest exhibit at the top of a steep hill near Rapid City, the park drew visitors whose cars often overheated on the climb, offering them an intriguing place to stop and view reptiles.

Over time, Reptile Gardens grew into one of the largest reptile zoos in the world, housing over 200 species. The park features the Sky Dome, an enclosed area where visitors can walk among free-roaming reptiles and birds, a concept pioneered by the founder.

Despite setbacks like a destructive fire in 1976, the gardens have thrived and are run by Brockelsby's family, continuing to offer close encounters with reptiles and an extensive botanical garden setting. The park is also active in wildlife conservation and education programs and has earned recognition such as Guinness World Records certification for its size.
