Resti del Castello di Castelnuovo Calcea
Castelnuovo Calcea, Italy, Italy
The Resti del Castello di Castelnuovo Calcea are the remains of a medieval castle located in the center of Castelnuovo Calcea, a hilltop village in Piedmont’s Monferrato region.
Originally built in 1154 by the Marquises of Incisa, the fortress was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt over the centuries due to the many wars that affected the area. Today, only parts of the castle survive, including sections of the bastions and a distinctive circular watchtower, which has become a symbol of the town.
Most of the visible remains date from later reconstructions, particularly those carried out in the 17th century. The site has been restored and converted into a public park with walking paths, open spaces, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding vineyards and countryside. It is valued as an important reminder of the area's medieval past and a scenic spot for visitors exploring Monferrato.
