Resti Della Torre Civica
Pavia, Italy, Italy
The Resti della Torre Civica are the surviving remains of Pavia’s historic Civic Tower, a medieval landmark that stood beside the city’s cathedral for nearly 900 years. Built in the 11th century, the tower served as both a bell tower and a symbol of civic authority, reaching a height of about 72 to 78 meters. On 17 March 1989, the tower unexpectedly collapsed, causing a tragic accident that resulted in deaths and injuries. The disaster shocked Italy and drew attention to the preservation and structural safety of historic buildings. Today, the ruins have been preserved as a memorial near Pavia Cathedral. They stand as a reminder of the city’s medieval past and of one of the most significant architectural losses in modern Italian history.
