Rheinfels Castle
Sankt Goar, Germany, Germany
Rheinfels Castle above Sankt Goar in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a vast ruined fortress—the largest on the Middle Rhine—built in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen as a toll castle to levy duties on Rhine shipping.
Expanded into a mighty stronghold withstanding a 1256 siege by the Rhenish League of Cities and later fortified against Louis XIV in 1692, it peaked as a Renaissance residence under Hesse's Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous around 1570 before French Revolutionary forces slighted it in 1797, reducing its original fivefold area.
Owned by St. Goar since 1925, the UNESCO-listed ruins today feature Europe's largest self-supporting vaulted cellar, a local history museum, and panoramic Rhine views accessible via guided tours.
