Risøbank
Mandal, Norway, Norway
Risøbank in Mandal, Norway, is a protected heritage estate between Sjøsanden and Kanalstranden beaches, built in 1901 as a summer residence by Scottish Lord Edward T. Salvesen, designed by renowned architect Sir Robert Lorimer blending Scottish and Norwegian styles, complete with an English garden, gazebo, tennis court, and Viking ship coat-of-arms inscribed with a Latin motto honoring rest after honest labor. The site hosted Norway's first oil refinery from 1862-1872, established by Salvesen's father Christian on former sandy heathland, importing Scottish crude before closure due to economic woes, later serving as family leisure grounds. Acquired by the state in 1971, its main building, tenant house, and clock house now function as event spaces, art gallery, rental lodging, and summer café amid rhododendron gardens and trails, drawing visitors for picnics at Lordens Beach and cultural exhibits.
