River Farm
Alexandria, Virginia, United States
River Farm in Alexandria, Virginia, is a historic 27-acre estate originally part of George Washington’s farmland, purchased by him in 1760 and known as River Farm since then. The property includes a 1920s manor house and a blend of naturalistic and formal gardens overlooking the Potomac River.
River Farm features large, ancient trees, such as Kentucky coffeetrees descended from Washington’s early nursery, one of the largest Osage-orange trees in the country, rare Franklinia trees, and scenic meadows and resting spots. It has a rich history, having passed through various owners, including a near sale to the Soviet Embassy in the 1970s that was stopped due to public opposition.
Today, it serves as the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society and is recognized as a Horticultural Landmark. The grounds offer demonstration gardens, extensive children's play areas, and wildlife viewing opportunities, combining historic preservation with environmentally responsible gardening practices.
