Rocca Aldobrandesca
Sovana, Province of Grosseto, Italy, Italy
Rocca Aldobrandesca is a medieval fortress located just outside the historic center of Sovana, a picturesque village in southern Tuscany.
Built around the 11th century on the site of earlier Etruscan fortifications, it served as the seat and symbol of power of the influential Aldobrandeschi family, who controlled the area for centuries. The fortress later passed to the Orsini family and then to the Republic of Siena before becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
As Sovana gradually declined in importance, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, although parts of it were restored over time. Today, visitors can see impressive remains of its walls, entrance gate, and tower rising above the village on a tuff rock outcrop. The ruins are a striking reminder of Sovana’s medieval past and offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of Tuscany’s most historic settlements.
