Rocca Aldobrandesca (Il Sasso)
Italy, Italy
Rocca Aldobrandesca, commonly known as Il Sasso, is a medieval fortress ruin that towers above the village of Roccalbegna in southern Tuscany.
Built by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, it occupies the summit of a dramatic rock outcrop overlooking the Albegna Valley, a position that made it an excellent defensive stronghold and lookout point. During the Middle Ages, the fortress played a key role in protecting the settlement and served as a refuge for residents during times of conflict.
Its elevated location made it extremely difficult to attack, and together with nearby fortifications it formed the core of Roccalbegna’s defensive system. Although now in ruins, substantial sections of its stone walls remain, creating a striking landmark above the village. Visitors are drawn to the site for its historical significance, dramatic setting, and panoramic views across the surrounding hills and valleys of Tuscany.
