Rocca Calascio is a spectacular medieval fortress in Italy’s Abruzzo region, perched high in the Apennine Mountains at about 1,460 meters above sea level.
Originally built in the 10th century as a watchtower and later expanded into a fortified stronghold, it is considered one of the highest and most iconic castles in Italy. The fortress was designed purely for military purposes, with thick stone walls and defensive towers overlooking the Navelli Plain and surrounding mountain routes.
Damaged by major earthquakes and gradually abandoned, it survives today as a remarkably preserved ruin within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Famous for its breathtaking views and dramatic setting, Rocca Calascio has appeared in several films, including Ladyhawke and The Name of the Rose.
