Rocca degli Alberi is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Montagnana, a historic walled town in the Veneto region of Italy.

Built between 1360 and 1362 by the powerful Carraresi family of Padua, it was designed to strengthen the town’s defenses against neighboring Verona and became the final major addition to Montagnana’s renowned fortification system. The fortress features a massive keep, defensive tower, fortified gateway, moats, drawbridges, and portcullises, making it one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in the region.

Its strategic design protected one of the main entrances to the town and demonstrated the advanced defensive engineering of the period. Its name, “degli Alberi” (“of the Trees”), comes from the wooded landscape that originally surrounded the site. Over time, the fortress became a defining symbol of Montagnana’s military and architectural heritage.

Today, Rocca degli Alberi remains one of the town’s most iconic landmarks, admired for its imposing appearance and its role in preserving the remarkably intact medieval character of Montagnana.
