Verified Rocca di Cento

Cento, Italy, Italy

Rocca di Cento is a medieval fortress located in the historic center of Cento, Emilia-Romagna.

Built in 1378 by order of the Bishop of Bologna, it was designed to strengthen control over the town and served as an important defensive stronghold for centuries. The fortress was repeatedly expanded and modernized during the 15th century, particularly under Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II.

Its distinctive structure includes a central keep, corner towers, and what was once a moat and drawbridge, reflecting the military architecture of the period. Over time, the Rocca lost its defensive role and was used as a prison before being restored as a cultural landmark. Today, it remains one of Cento’s most recognizable symbols, valued for its history, architecture, and connection to the town’s heritage.
