Rocca di Cormons
Italy, Italy
Rocca di Cormons, also known as the Castle of Monte Quarin, is an ancient hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Cormons in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The site has been strategically important since prehistoric and Roman times, while the first major fortress was built by the Lombards in the 6th or 7th century as part of a defensive system against invasions. Over the centuries, it was controlled by the Patriarchs of Aquileia, the Counts of Gorizia, the Habsburgs, and briefly the Venetians, reflecting the region’s turbulent history.
Although only ruins remain today, the fortress is valued for its historical significance and its panoramic views across the surrounding hills, vineyards, and countryside.
