Rocca di Monfalcone
Italy, Italy
Rocca di Monfalcone is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Monfalcone in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Built on a site that had been strategically important since prehistoric and Roman times, the fortress is traditionally associated with Theodoric the Great and dates back to around the late 5th century. Over the centuries, it was controlled by the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the Counts of Gorizia, and the Republic of Venice, which strengthened its defenses to protect the region.
Although it eventually lost its military role, the fortress has been restored and today offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the area’s long history, along with panoramic views of the Gulf of Trieste and the surrounding landscape.
