Verified Rocca di Montauto

Italy, Italy

Rocca di Montauto, often known locally as the Roccaccia di Montauto, is a ruined medieval fortress located near Manciano in southern Tuscany.

Built in the 13th century by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, it stands on a hill overlooking the Fiora Valley and once played an important role in controlling and defending the surrounding territory. Over the centuries, the fortress passed through the hands of several noble families and states, including the Orsini and the Republic of Siena.

It was renovated during the 15th century but gradually lost its military importance after becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, eventually falling into ruin. Today, visitors can see the remains of its stone walls, fortified courtyard, and imposing tower rising above the surrounding landscape. Set within the protected Montauto nature reserve, the site is valued for both its historical significance and its panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside and the distant Tyrrhenian coast.
